 The AHA's Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course has been updated to reflect new science in the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care and the 2015 American Heart Association and American Red Cross Update for First Aid. This course is designed to prepare students to provide first aid, CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner.

 Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Online is the eLearning portion of the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED blended learning course and is designed to teach students the cognitive information needed for first aid, CPR, and AED training.

 Upon successful completion of both the online and hands-on portions of the course, students receive a Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course completion card, valid for two years.

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
  • Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize when someone needs CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for an adult
  • Describe how to perform CPR with help from others
  • Give effective breaths by using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult
  • Perform high-quality CPR for a child*
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on a child*
  • Perform high-quality CPR for an infant*
  • Describe when and how to help a choking adult or child
  • Demonstrate how to help a choking infant*
  • List the priorities, roles, and responsibilities of first aid rescuers
  • Describe the key steps in first aid
  • Remove protective gloves
  • Find the problem
  • Describe the assessment and first aid actions for the following life-threatening conditions: heart attack, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, shock, and stroke
  • Use an epinephrine pen
  • Control bleeding and bandaging
  • Recognize elements of common injuries
  • Recognize elements of common illnesses
  • Describe how to find information on preventing illness and injury
  • Recognize the legal questions that apply to first aid rescuers

*Child/Infant Module is optional.

STUDENTS MUST PRESENT THE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE FROM THE ONLINE PORTION IN ORDER TO ATTEND. 

Part 1. CLICK HERE TO COMPLETE PART 1 if you've not already completed the Heartsaver First Aid, CPR, AED Blended Course Online with THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION.

Students complete the online, cognitive portion of the course, either at the workplace or anywhere with Internet access. When students finish the online portion, a certificate of completion will be available for them to print. The certificate is required to complete Part 2. 

Part 2. SIGN UP FOR PART 2 PRACTICE AND HANDS ON SKILLS TEST AT THE COUNCIL'S AHA TRAINING CENTER. 

Students complete the skills validation test with an instructor at the Council's Training Center with an instructor. The skills test takes approximately 2 hours & 30 minutes to complete and only 6 people are allowed per session.
